Shenzhen University Approved to Establish "Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Space-based Microwave Calibration"

Time:2026-04-03

Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission officially issued the "Notice from the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission on the Establishment of the 2025 Guangdong Engineering Research Centers." The "Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Space-based Microwave Calibration," led by Professor Lei Huang, Executive Dean of the College of Electronic and Information Engineering at Shenzhen University, has been approved for construction. This marks a significant advancement for Shenzhen University in cutting-edge engineering research in high-end equipment manufacturing in the satellite application industry.

The "Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Space-based Microwave Calibration" addresses the strategic needs of the national aerospace and high-end equipment manufacturing sectors, focusing on challenges such as unified radiation standards and precise calibration for multi-source space-based microwave equipment (e.g., meteorological radars, remote sensing satellites, satellite communication base stations, etc.). Guided by space-based applications like high-resolution wide-swath observation, polar ocean monitoring, and large-scale satellite communication networks, the center aims to advance key technologies beyond traditional ground-based calibration, including space-based calibration  systems and satellite-ground collaborative space-based calibration. It also seeks to build a mission planning and performance evaluation system for a  space-based calibration network, promoting the independent and systematic development of space-based microwave equipment. The goal is to establish a complete microwave calibration system, covering both ground-based calibration and space-based calibration, enabling full-chain capabilities from equipment calibration to data application, and providing solid support for national space information infrastructure construction and high-quality remote sensing data application. The Engineering Research Center will serve as a strategic scientific and technological force for Guangdong Province in the satellite and application industries, supporting the high-quality development of the space information industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and nationwide.

The "Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Space-based Microwave Calibration" primarily centers on Professor Lei Huang's team from the College of Electronic and Information Engineering at Shenzhen University, focusing on breakthroughs and applications in frontier key technologies in the field of space-based microwave calibration. Professor Lei Huang's team led the approval of the National Key R&D Program project: "Key Technologies for Space-Based Active Microwave Calibration Network," and is leading Shenzhen University 2035 Program for Excellent Research (Category A) project: "Development of Space-Based Calibration Satellite (SZU-1) System," developing the world's first microwave calibration satellite.

A responsible official from Shenzhen University pointed out that the successful approval of the "Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Space-Based Microwave Calibration" is a strong affirmation of the university's innovative strength and engineering research and development capabilities in the relevant disciplinary areas. Going forward, the university will take this as a new starting point, deeply align with national strategic deployments and the industrial development needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, leverage the platform advantages of this center, attract high-level talent extensively, promote the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, accelerate breakthroughs in key core technologies and improve the efficiency of technology transfer, and contribute to the development of high-end equipment manufacturing in the aerospace field in Guangdong Province and even nationwide.
